About the Temple

Sri Krishna Mandiram is a centre for socio-religious activities located in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. The activities of the temple commenced in 1979. In April 1981, beautiful sila moorthys of Sri Maha Ganapathy, Sri Rama along with Sita Devi, Lakshmana and Sri Anjaneya were consecrated in the mandapam. The consecration was conducted in accordance with the vedic rites.

On the holy Vijayadasami day of 1986, the owner of the place, Sri R. A. Krishnaswamy Iyer, an engineer of international repute, philanthropist, donated the land comprising of the mandapams and adjacent areas to ‘Hindu Dharmartha Samithi Trust’ – a registered body dedicated to the cause of building and maintaining Hindu temples. Under the guidance of the Samithi, a small committee comprising of local residents have been formed to look after the day-to-day affairs of the temple.

The temple was renovated and re-structured with Ashtabandhana Maha Kumbabishekam in 2012. The new temple structure has three separate sannathis – Sri Maha Ganapathy, Sri Radha Krishna and Sri Seetha, Lakshmana and Anjaneya sametha Sri Ramachandra moorthy. There is also a fourth and separate sannathi for Sri Bakhta Anjaneya straight in front of Sri Ramachandra moorthys’ sannathi

Day-to-Day Activities & Poojas

Since 1979 daily poojas are being performed and people in and around the area avail the benefit of the rituals and are blessed by Sri Maha Ganapathy, Sri Radha Krishna, Sri Ramachandra Moorthy and Sri Anjaneya. Special poojas are performed on specific days like
  • Sankata Hara Chaturthi Pournima
  • Maha Shivarathri
  • Vinayaka Chathurthi
  • Sri Krishna Jayanthi
  • Sri Rama Navami
Special abhishekam and poojas are also performed to the moorthys on request of the bhaktas, either on their birthdays, anniversaries etc. Apart from vedic poojas for the moorthys in the sanctum, special rituals are conducted during Rama Navami, Sri Krishna Jayanthi, Navarathri, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Tamil New Years day.

Sri Rama Navami

During Sri Rama Navami, Sri Ramayanam is recited by scholars (invited by the temple authorities) in the Navaham format (completing recitation of Sri Ramayanam in 9 days) during the mornings, starting 9 days before Rama Navami and ending on the Sri Rama Navami Day. During the evenings, there are cultural activities like Carnatic Music, Bhajans, Bharata Natiyam dance programs. On the Rama Navami day, Sri Rama Pattabishekkam is conducted with Maha Arathi and grand ‘Kalyana Sappadu’ for all bakhtas.

During the nine days, one of the weekends, Seetha Kalyanam is conducted in the traditional Bhajana Sampradaya method by any of the eminent Bhagavathals and many devotees from the locality and also from other parts of Chennai take part to get Sri Rama Prasada. This Seetha Kalyanam includes Guru Keerthanai, Ashtapathi and Deepa Pradakshina in the first day; Unjavarthi, Seetha Kalyanam, Anjaneya Uthsavam in the second day.

Sri Krishna Jayanthi

Similar to Sri Rama Navami celebrations, Srimad Bhagavatham is recited in the Saptaham format (completing recitation of Srimad Bhagavatham in 7 days). During these 7 days, there are recitations during the mornings and cultural activities in the evening. These typically end with a Radha Kalyanam in the traditional Bhajana Sampradaya method.

Vinayaka Chathurthi

on the Vinayaka Chathurthi day homam with 108 mothakas with recitation of Sri Maha Ganapathi moola manthras, performed by eminent purohits or ganapatigals.

Navarathri

During Navarathri, big ‘Kolu’is setup within the temple by the local residents; Kalasam is setup with Durga Lakshmi and Saraswathi devis activated in the Kalasam. Durga sapthasathi / Chandi parayanam is recited during all 9 days. On the Saraswathi pooja day, Chandi homam with Suhasini Pooja, Kannika Pooja are performed with grand offerings to Sri Chandi matha to conclude the Navarathri function.

Lakcharchana

During the month of Purattasi, Laksha Archana is performed to Sri Ramachandra Moorthy on one of the Saturdays. Whereby, many participate in the archana to recite Vishnu Sahasra Nama and collectively counting to Laksha Archana.

Margazhi Veethi Bhajan

During the month of Margazhi, the most beloved month for Sri Krishna, traditional veethi bhajans conducted during the early mornings on all 30 days of the month. During rainy days bhajans are conducted inside the temple premises. During the evenings, Upanyasams by eminent scholars are arranged by the temple authorities which are attended by local residents and people from different parts of the City.

Tamil New Years Day

On Tamil New Years day, around evening Panchanga Patanam will be conducted where the key predictions for the year, mentioned in poetic format in the Panchangam, are read out aloud for the benefit of everybody. Local people attend the program. The program concludes with maha arathi to the moorthys praying for a great year ahead.
